Hyvä Commerce vs Hyvä Theme: What's the difference?
Hyvä Theme and Hyvä Commerce are different products with the same brand. Pricing them as if they're alternatives ("which one do I buy?") is the first thing most merchants get wrong.
The right model: Hyvä Theme is the storefront. Hyvä Commerce is the storefront plus the checkout, the admin UI, and the analytics layer. Most stores start with Theme. Some add Commerce later. A few buy Commerce from day one.
This post is the decision framework.
What's in each
Hyvä Theme covers the public-facing storefront frontend:
- Header, footer, navigation
- Homepage, CMS pages
- Product Listing Pages (PLP), search results, category filters
- Product Detail Pages (PDP)
- Cart page
- Customer-account section (orders, addresses, wishlists, etc.)
That's it. The checkout page itself is not in Hyvä Theme — it stays on the legacy Magento Knockout checkout unless you specifically add Hyvä Checkout.
Hyvä Commerce bundles:
- Hyvä Theme (everything above)
- Hyvä Checkout — one-page checkout replacing the legacy Magento multi-step flow
- Hyvä Admin (where licensed) — modernised admin-panel UI
- Hyvä Insights (where licensed) — analytics + merchant dashboards
The license tier is one purchase from Hyvä Themes; the implementation work for each component is separate.
The cost difference, real numbers
Hyvä Theme license: £1,000–£3,000 per domain, one-time. 12 months of updates included. Renewals optional after that.
Hyvä Commerce license: ~£3,000–£5,000 per year. Includes Theme + Checkout + Admin + Insights.
Implementation cost (we quote):
- Theme-only: £12,000–£35,000 (6–10 weeks)
- Full Hyvä Commerce: £35,000–£90,000 (10–14 weeks)
So Commerce roughly doubles the implementation budget. The license is also higher and recurring rather than one-time. The marginal cost is real; the decision needs to justify it.
The conversion-lift question
The single biggest reason to buy Hyvä Commerce instead of Hyvä Theme is Hyvä Checkout. The Magento default checkout is built on Knockout.js + RequireJS, weighs several megabytes of JavaScript, and uses a multi-step flow that performs particularly badly on mobile.
Hyvä Checkout rebuilds the flow as a single Alpine.js page. JS payload shrinks ~70%. Across the implementations we've measured, mobile checkout completion lifts 8–15% consistently.
On a £1M+ revenue store with mobile-heavy traffic, that lift is the highest-ROI single Hyvä investment available. On a desktop-heavy or low-traffic store, the case is weaker — the JS payload is annoying but it isn't your conversion bottleneck.
When Hyvä Theme alone is enough
Most stores fall here. Pick Theme-only if:
- Your checkout completion rate isn't your top-priority conversion issue
- Mobile traffic is under 60% of total sessions
- You're cost-sensitive and want the cheapest path to "modern Magento frontend"
- You're testing the Hyvä approach before committing to the full suite
Hyvä Theme captures the bulk of the storefront wins — faster PDP, faster PLP, dramatically better Core Web Vitals, conventional frontend tooling. The checkout stays on legacy Magento, which is okay for most stores.
When Hyvä Commerce earns its premium
Pick Commerce if:
- Mobile checkout completion is your bottleneck. If your funnel report shows people adding to cart then dropping off at checkout on mobile, Hyvä Checkout is the answer.
- You want a single design language across storefront + checkout + customer account. Hyvä Commerce gives you a coherent visual experience end-to-end. Theme-only leaves a Knockout-island checkout that looks visually different.
- You're on Adobe Commerce with heavy B2B features. Hyvä Commerce covers the company-account, quote-flow, and customer-segment surfaces that B2B Adobe Commerce stores need.
- You're building for the next 5 years. Hyvä Commerce is where the Hyvä product roadmap concentrates — new features land in Commerce first.
Hyvä Admin + Insights — worth it?
Honest take: probably not as a day-one purchase.
Hyvä Admin modernises the admin-panel UI. It's nicer to use than classic Magento admin, but most merchants have an in-house team that's already trained on classic Magento. The switching cost (retraining staff) usually outweighs the UX improvement.
Hyvä Insights gives merchant-facing analytics dashboards. It's competing with Google Analytics, PostHog, and any BI tool you already pay for. If you already have a working analytics stack, Insights duplicates capability you don't need.
We tell most clients to skip Admin + Insights initially. Add them in phase 3 if your team specifically wants the unified Hyvä experience.
Phased rollout — what we usually recommend
For most merchants, the right sequence is:
Phase 1 (weeks 1–8): Hyvä Theme. Ship the storefront. Captures the Lighthouse + UX wins. Lets the team get comfortable with the new admin patterns and Tailwind config.
Phase 2 (weeks 9–12, or next quarter): Hyvä Checkout. Add the one-page checkout once the storefront is bedded in. Lower risk because the storefront is already proven in production. This is where the conversion lift hits.
Phase 3 (optional, when relevant): Hyvä Admin + Insights. Modernise admin UX for your in-house team where it matters; skip if your team has no friction with classic Magento admin.
This phasing spreads budget across two quarters and de-risks the cutover. Going Theme + Checkout in one big bang is fine for greenfield builds; less ideal for high-traffic existing stores.
What we wouldn't do
Don't buy Hyvä Commerce just to get Theme cheaper in some bundle. Hyvä Themes pricing doesn't actually bundle that way — Theme alone is genuinely cheaper. The Commerce premium only makes sense if you're going to use Checkout (and ideally Admin + Insights too).
Don't buy Theme then never upgrade to Commerce. If your roadmap includes Checkout within 12 months, the Commerce license is cheaper than Theme + Checkout licenses purchased separately later. Plan the path before you sign.
Don't switch from Theme to Commerce halfway through implementation. The Hyvä Checkout work is materially different from Theme work — you can't add it mid-project without a scope re-quote. Decide upfront.
The decision tree
- Mobile checkout completion under industry benchmark (<50% mobile)? → Hyvä Commerce
- £1M+ revenue, mobile traffic >60%? → Hyvä Commerce
- B2B Adobe Commerce store with company accounts / shared catalogues? → Hyvä Commerce
- Anything else (most stores) → Hyvä Theme, add Commerce in 6–12 months if checkout becomes the bottleneck
