The real cost of Hyvä Commerce: A breakdown for 2026
Hyvä Commerce implementations cost between £35,000 and £90,000. That's a 2.5x range for what looks like the same scope on paper. This post is the line-item breakdown of where the variance actually comes from.
What's in Hyvä Commerce
Quick refresher before the cost talk. Hyvä Commerce bundles four products under one license tier:
- Hyvä Theme — storefront frontend (PDP, PLP, search, cart, account, CMS)
- Hyvä Checkout — one-page checkout replacing legacy Magento checkout
- Hyvä Admin (where licensed) — modernised admin-panel UI
- Hyvä Insights (where licensed) — analytics + merchant dashboards
The implementation cost is for the build work. The Hyvä Commerce license itself sits on top — ~£3,000–£5,000 per year, billed by Hyvä Themes directly.
The cost breakdown, line by line
For a typical mid-range Hyvä Commerce implementation (£50,000–£60,000 budget), here's how the budget splits:
| Component | Share | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Hyvä Theme build (storefront templates) | 35–40% | £18k–£24k |
| Hyvä Checkout implementation | 20–25% | £10k–£15k |
| Extension compatibility modules | 15–20% | £8k–£12k |
| Performance tuning + QA | 10–12% | £5k–£7k |
| Hyvä Admin + Insights (if licensed) | 5–10% | £2k–£6k |
| Project management + handover | 5% | £2k–£3k |
The biggest swing is extension compatibility — same as Hyvä Theme builds, the extension count drives the cost. A store with 8 extensions costs less than a store with 25.
Why two same-scope projects diverge 2x
The £35k vs £80k question. Here's where the variance hides:
1. Extension count + complexity (biggest variable)
- 8 paid extensions, all vendor-compat available: £2k–£4k of compat work
- 25 paid extensions, half need custom compat: £25k+ of compat work
Same "Hyvä Commerce implementation" on paper. 6x cost difference on the compat line item alone.
2. Payment + shipping integration count
- 2 payment methods, vendor-integrated: 1 day of work
- 6 payment methods, half need custom Hyvä Checkout integration: 3–4 weeks of work
If your Hyvä Checkout integration list includes Authorize.Net or Sage Pay or a regional UK gateway without vendor compat, each custom integration is 1–2 weeks of work and £2k–£6k of cost.
3. B2B feature scope (Adobe Commerce)
- B2C store, no B2B features: standard Hyvä Commerce timeline
- Full B2B Adobe Commerce: company accounts + shared catalogues + quotes + approvals: +4–6 weeks of work, +£12k–£20k
Hyvä Commerce on Adobe Commerce B2B is materially more expensive than B2C Hyvä Commerce. Don't conflate them.
4. Customer-account section complexity
- Stock Magento customer account (orders, addresses, wishlists): included in Theme build
- Custom account features (subscriptions, gift cards, store credit, returns portal): each one is a separate Hyvä template surface, £1k–£3k each
A store with a heavily customised customer account adds £5k–£12k to the Theme build.
5. Design fidelity vs rebrand
- Faithful Luma → Hyvä rebuild: included in standard cost
- Brand refresh bolted on: +£8k–£15k for design + dev iteration
If you're already redesigning, do it inside the Hyvä build. If you're not, save the rebrand for next year.
6. Multi-store / multi-website Magento setup
- Single storefront: standard cost
- 2+ storefronts with shared product catalogue: +£8k–£20k depending on store-view variance
Multi-store complexity is non-linear. Two stores aren't 2x the cost of one if the design + functionality are identical. Five stores with country-specific variations are easily 3x the cost of one.
Component-by-component, what you're paying for
Hyvä Theme build (£18k–£24k)
What's in it:
- Tailwind config matching your brand (colours, typography, spacing, radii)
- Component library (button, card, badge, form input, modal, accordion, etc.)
- Header, footer, navigation, breadcrumb
- Homepage + CMS pages
- PDP — image gallery, variant selector, price block, related products, reviews, FAQs
- PLP — filters, sorting, pagination
- Search results
- Cart page
- Customer account section (dashboard, orders, addresses, wishlists, returns)
Variance: customer-account complexity, PDP merchandising widget count, CMS block count.
Hyvä Checkout implementation (£10k–£15k)
What's in it:
- Hyvä Checkout package install + Tailwind brand styling
- Address forms, shipping rate selection, payment method selection
- Vendor-supported payment method integration (Stripe, Adyen, PayPal, etc.)
- Order placement flow end-to-end
- Tax + VAT verified across applicable jurisdictions
- Performance tuning (Lighthouse 90+ on checkout page)
- UAT with real orders on staging
Variance: payment gateway count + custom integration needs, fraud module integration, B2B fields (PO number, multi-account, approvals).
Extension compatibility modules (£8k–£12k)
What's in it:
- Vendor-supplied Hyvä compat installed + configured for extensions that ship it
- Custom Hyvä-compatibility module written for extensions without vendor compat
- Each extension tested in context (banners showing, badges rendering, integrations firing)
Variance: extension count, custom-compat ratio, complexity of touched extensions (display-only is cheap, checkout-touching is expensive).
Performance tuning + QA (£5k–£7k)
What's in it:
- Mobile Lighthouse audit + tuning to 90+ on PDP, PLP, search, checkout
- Critical CSS inlining, font preload, image priority
- JavaScript budget management, lazy-loading
- Third-party tag audit (often the biggest gain)
- Cross-browser QA on iOS Safari, Android Chrome, desktop browsers
- Accessibility pass (keyboard nav, screen reader, contrast)
- Schema.org structured data validation (Product, Offer, Breadcrumb, FAQPage)
Variance: third-party tag count, accessibility-compliance level required, brand-specific QA scenarios.
Hyvä Admin + Insights (optional, £2k–£6k)
What's in it:
- Hyvä Admin install + brand styling
- Hyvä Insights dashboards configured for your KPIs
- In-house team training on the new admin UX
Variance: amount of admin customisation already done, how much your team uses analytics.
Honest take: most merchants skip Hyvä Admin + Insights initially. The in-house team is already trained on classic Magento admin and the switching cost outweighs the UX improvement. Add in phase 3 if your team specifically wants the unified Hyvä experience.
Project management + handover (£2k–£3k)
What's in it:
- Weekly progress sync + dashboard against the signed timeline
- Slack-style communication channels, async-first
- Handover doc covering theme config, custom modules, deploy runbook
- 5-day post-launch bug-fix sprint
Variance: low — this is roughly fixed per project regardless of scope.
Phasing — how to spread the cost
For most merchants, the right sequence is:
Phase 1 (~£20–35k): Hyvä Theme. Storefront only. Captures the bulk of the Lighthouse + UX wins. Lets the team get comfortable with new admin patterns.
Phase 2 (~£10–20k): Hyvä Checkout. Add the one-page checkout once the storefront is bedded in. Lower-risk because storefront is already proven in production. This is where the conversion lift hits.
Phase 3 (optional, ~£3–8k): Hyvä Admin + Insights. Modernise admin UX if your in-house team wants it.
Total: £35k–£65k spread across two quarters instead of one £50k bang.
Spreads budget across two financial quarters and de-risks the cutover. Most merchants prefer this over going Theme + Checkout in one big bang.
License cost — separate from implementation
The Hyvä Commerce license is billed by Hyvä Themes, not by us. As of 2026:
- Hyvä Commerce license: ~£3,000–£5,000 per year (includes Theme + Checkout + Admin + Insights)
- Hyvä Theme license alone: ~£1,000–£3,000 one-time per domain
For a £1M+ revenue store, the license cost is rounding error compared to implementation cost + conversion lift. Don't let the license question drive the buy decision — it's not the variable that matters.
What "fixed price" actually means
When we quote £55,000 for a Hyvä Commerce implementation, that means:
- £55,000 total — not £55,000 plus surprises
- The scope is itemised in the quote — every page, every extension, every integration
- If we go over on time, we eat the cost
- Out-of-scope additions (new extensions added mid-project, new pages added mid-project) require a re-quote — not a hidden charge
- No hourly billing, no day rates, no "we'll bill you for the extra time"
The whole point of fixed-price is risk transfer from you to us. If an agency quotes hourly, you're carrying the delivery risk. We don't operate that way; we don't recommend agencies that do.
The £35k case vs the £80k case
To make the variance concrete, here's a real comparison from our books:
Project A: £36,000
- Magento Open Source B2C store
- 8 paid extensions, 6 with vendor Hyvä compat
- 2 payment methods (Stripe + PayPal, vendor-integrated)
- Faithful design rebuild from existing Luma
- No B2B features
- Single storefront
- 9-week timeline
Project B: £78,000
- Adobe Commerce B2B store
- 22 paid extensions, 11 needing custom Hyvä compat
- 5 payment methods including 2 needing custom integration
- Brand refresh bolted onto the migration
- Full B2B Adobe Commerce features (company accounts, shared catalogues, quotes)
- 3 storefronts (UK, EU, US)
- 14-week timeline
Same product on paper. 2.2x cost difference driven by extension count, integration custom work, B2B scope, and multi-store complexity.
