What Hyvä replaces

Hyvä replaces the Magento Luma theme and the Knockout-based frontend rendering layer. It does not replace the Magento backend, the database, order processing, or the admin panel. A Hyvä migration is a frontend swap, not a re-platform.

Why Hyvä exists

Magento's default frontend was designed around 2014-2015 with patterns that age badly: 80+ JavaScript files loaded per page, megabytes of Knockout bindings, mobile Lighthouse scores often stuck below 60. Hyvä was created in 2020 to fix this by replacing the rendering layer with a modern stack while keeping the rest of Magento intact.

Typical performance impact

A Magento store migrating from Luma to Hyvä typically moves mobile Lighthouse Performance from 30-55 to 80-92. JavaScript payload drops roughly 5x. Frontend development velocity improves because Tailwind plus Alpine are conventional tools that engineers already know.

Licensing

Hyvä Themes is a commercial product. One-time per-domain license fee, typically £1,000 to £3,000 depending on Magento version and license type. Updates included for 12 months; renewals optional after that.
