Top Hyvä agencies in the UK in 2026 — and how to choose
The Hyvä agency market is small enough that a UK merchant can pick from maybe a dozen genuinely Hyvä-specialist agencies. This post is the practical guide — the criteria that matter, the agencies worth shortlisting, and the questions to ask before signing.
A note on bias: we're a Hyvä-specialist agency (eTechFlow). We're one of the agencies on the shortlist below. We've tried to be honest about the criteria and the competitive landscape; you should still cross-check with other sources before committing budget.
The criteria that actually matter
In rough order of weight when picking a Hyvä agency:
1. Hyvä volume
How many Hyvä builds the agency has shipped end-to-end in the last 18 months. A specialist ships Hyvä every week, not once a quarter. The depth compounds — agencies that have built 30+ Hyvä sites have a compatibility-module library and a perf-tuning playbook that first-timers don't.
2. Fixed-price model
Real Hyvä specialists quote fixed-price, fixed-timeline scopes. Agencies that bill hourly are transferring delivery risk to you because they don't have enough Hyvä experience to predict the timeline. Walk away from hourly-rate Hyvä quotes.
3. Public Hyvä community presence
Active contributions to compat.hyva.io, Hyvä Slack participation, GitHub repos with Hyvä compat modules, blog posts dissecting Hyvä-specific problems. The agencies whose engineers are visible in the community are the ones doing the work.
4. UK timezone / working hours alignment
For UK merchants, working with an agency in UK or compatible timezone is meaningfully better than offshore. Calls happen during your business day; UAT cycles don't take 24-hour round-trips; emergency support during launch happens in your hours.
5. References + case studies
A real agency has clients they can refer you to directly (not just testimonials on the website). They have case studies with specific numbers — not vague "improved performance" claims.
6. Agency size — less important than people assume
Bigger isn't necessarily better. Some of the best Hyvä work in the UK comes from agencies under 20 people; some of the worst comes from 200-person agencies where Hyvä is a side practice. Size matters less than focus.
What doesn't matter
Things merchants overweight that don't actually predict project success:
- Agency website polish. A nice agency website tells you the agency has a good marketing team. Doesn't tell you they can ship Hyvä.
- Awards. Magento awards, ecommerce awards, design awards — they're nice but don't correlate with delivery quality on Hyvä specifically.
- Number of countries served. A "global" agency isn't better than a focused UK + EU + US agency for Hyvä work.
- Magento Partner tier. Magento Partner status doesn't say anything about Hyvä-specific capability.
- Clutch / G2 / GoodFirms badges. These are paid-for placement with limited Hyvä-specific vetting.

These are agencies we know personally to have shipped genuine Hyvä work for UK merchants. Listed alphabetically. How to shortlist in 1 hour
A practical shortlist exercise:
- Open hyva.io/partners. Filter for UK or Europe geography. That's your candidate list.
- For each, check their website for: "How many Hyvä builds have you shipped?" + a case study with specific numbers
- Cross-reference with compat.hyva.io contributors. Agencies whose engineers contribute to the tracker are doing the work.
- Cross-reference with the Hyvä community Slack. Agencies whose engineers answer technical Hyvä questions in #general are specialists.
- Eliminate agencies that: quote hourly only, want a deposit before sending a scope, can't name specific extensions they've built compat for
That filters a 50-agency long-list to a 5-agency shortlist in an hour.
How to vet the shortlist in 30 minutes per agency
Three questions, asked back-to-back in a scoping call:
"How many Hyvä builds have you shipped end-to-end in the last 18 months?" Specialist gives a number with context. Generalist deflects.
"Show me a Hyvä compatibility module your team has written from scratch." Specialist pulls up a GitHub repo. Generalist says "we'll prepare a portfolio."
"What's your typical mobile Lighthouse score on a Hyvä site you've built?" Specialist gives a number (92, 88, 95) with what pulls it down. Generalist talks about Lighthouse generally.
If you get specific answers to all three in 5 minutes, the agency is real. If you get deflections, keep looking.

The "what would you do differently if you were us" question
When you've narrowed to 2–3 finalists, ask each: "If you were us, what would you do differently from what we've described in our scope?"
Specialists give specific, actionable suggestions — they've seen patterns in your category. Generalists either agree with everything (selling) or give generic management-consulting answers.
This is the single best signal of whether the agency is going to be a partner or a vendor.
Red flags to walk away from
1. Won't provide direct client references. Real agencies have happy clients willing to take a call.
2. Quote arrives in lump sum with no line items. Specialists have a costing model. Lump sums mean no model.
3. Quote is dramatically cheaper than other quotes. Usually means scope is misunderstood or hourly-rate is hidden somewhere.
4. Quote is dramatically more expensive than other quotes. Either premium-pricing for premium-quality (valid) or padding for low confidence (not valid). Ask for the line-item breakdown.
5. PM-driven sales process. If you only ever talk to an account manager and never to the senior engineer who'd run the project, walk away.
6. Sub-contracts the actual work. Ask directly: "Will the engineers writing my code work for your company?" If no, find an agency where the answer is yes.
How to make the final decision
Between two qualified Hyvä specialists with similar Hyvä volume and similar quotes:
- Pick the one with better cultural fit on the kickoff call. You'll work with these people for 8–14 weeks; communication style matters.
- Pick the one with clearer line-item pricing. Transparency on what costs what predicts honest project management later.
- Pick the one whose engineer (not PM) you've talked to in scoping. Engineering-led agencies ship better Hyvä work than account-manager-led ones.
What if you're a small store and budget is tight?
Hyvä migration economics get tight under £500k annual revenue. Two options:
- Push pause. Grow top-of-funnel revenue first; come back to Hyvä when migration cost vs conversion lift pencils out.
- Pick the smallest agency on the shortlist. Smaller specialist agencies often have lower overheads and price 10–20% lower than larger ones for equivalent work.
Don't pick a non-specialist generalist agency just because they're cheaper. The "cheap then expensive when it goes wrong" pattern is worse than waiting.
